Jerramungup

Welcome to Jerramungup Jerramungup derives its name from the Aboriginal name meaning 'Place of the tall Yate Trees'.

When World War II, finished, the Commonwealth and State Governments initiated bold, large-scale projects to repatriate thousands of Australian servicemen returning to civilian life. Jerramungup was one of the Shires which was established as a war service settlement and was arguably the biggest land development project ever accomplished in the western world in such a short period of time.

Today, Jerramungup is a diverse agricultural area supporting the production of sheep, wool, cattle and grains. The Shire of Jerramungup extends to Bremer Bay on the far South Coast.

Sightseeing

Fitzgerald River National Park
Jerramungup is on the edge of this unique National Park. It is one of Australia's largest National Parks, an UNESCO recognized Biosphere Reserve with an extremely diverse Flora and Fauna, with about 1900 species of plants, 75 of which are endemic and abundant bird life. Discover the mallee-heathland, rugged mountain ranges and rivers.

There are a number of walk trails from 1 to 3 hours, as well as overnight walks. You're required to register with the ranger if you are planning an overnight journey. Most attractions can be reached on 2wd gravel roads. There are quite a few 4wd trails as well and it is advisable to contact the ranger about their condition before heading off for your adventure.

Jerramungup Town Hall
Known as the 'Root Pickers Hall', it opened in April 1958. Located adjacent to Roe Park on Memorial Road, its name came about because the hall was paid for through volunteers picking mallee roots.

Roe Park
Located in the centre of Jerramungup, and named after John Septimus Roe, there is a memorial plaque to Major Colin Cameron, War Service Land Services Supervisor, in the south east corner of the park. Major Cameron played an integral role in overseeing the rapid development of Jerramungup as a War Service Settlement.
