Tambellup's original settler was Mr Josiah Norrish, who tookup property east of the present town site in 1872. Mr Norrishoriginally concentrated on sandalwood cutting but later becameinvolved in sheep breeding. Following the opening of the GreatSouthern Railway line in 1889, settlers began to arrive and thetown was declared in 1899.

Tambellup is situated 328km south-east of Perth and has apopulation of 675 people. It is in the heart of a mixed grainand sheep farming belt and falls within the Local Governmentboundary of the Shire of Broomehill Tambellup.


Tambellup Community Resource Centre

The mainhub of the town. Located in a building more than 100 yearsit still has originalhistoric etched windows and interior fixtures. The Tambellup CRCoffers a wide range of services from Broadband Internet, digitalphoto processing, Centrelink and Medicare access points, touristinformation and giftware, library and of course a friendly smile.

Tambellup Heritage Trail

TAMBELLUP HERITAGE TRAIL is a series of three interconnectingtrails that start in the centre of town and takes in much of thehistory of the early settlement.

  1. The town trail is a loop that follows a 600m self-guided walkwith information boards andplaques along the way.
  2. The river trail is to the northof town and is more than 2kmin length. The stories are told onorientation boards at the startand in the pamphlet.
  3. The noongar trail, 1500 metres,is south of the town along theGordon River and takes in the
    landscape of the river and reserve.

Corner Shop Museum

The Corner Shop Museum is situated in the oldStationmaster’s Houseadjacent to the railway lineon Norrish Street. Roomshave been recreated usingfurniture and artefacts ofbygone years. For a viewingplease contact Anne-MarieLockyer on 9825 1054.

Diprose Park

Diprose Park is a newly reconstructed park with children’s playarea, outdoor fitness centre, free barbeque and toilets. Located onthe corner of Crowden and Taylor Street it is a fantastic place for apicnic or to take a break from your long drive.

One of the last countrycommunity shows located on the main street with free entry, kidsentertainment, product display stalls and community exhibitions.Held on the 2nd Saturday of October and is always a great familyday out.

Railway Water Tank

One ofthe few remaining links to the dayswhen the Great Southern dependedon steam trains. Unfortunately thetank is now gone but the tank standremains. Just to the north of the tankare indicators from the 1955 and 1982floods to show how far the GordonRiver rose, it is very hard to imagine.

Toolbrunup School

Theschool is now 100 years oldwith the original blackboardand desks. The school iskept preserved by a team ofdedicated locals and is wellworth a visit. It is locatedalong the Toolbrunup Road(4km south along the GreatSouthern Hwy) and is usedwidely for picnics and eventhe odd wedding.
